The Haverford Campaign Calls for Divestment from Israel
The Bi-College News
February 24, 2009
"Do you notice that, even among educated people, there is general recognition of the fact that the modern state of Israel was founded as a symbol of the suffering of humanity...but almost no awareness that this has been at the expense of another people who were innocent of guilt?"
These are the words of Harry Saul, a member of Haverford College's Class of 1972.
Saul is a member of a group of Haverford alumni that have started The Haverford Campaign, at www.thehaverfordcampaign.com. The Campaign calls upon Haverford to divest fully from any entity that contributes to or supports what he calls "the apartheid" in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.
Bryn Mawr's Divestment Campaign
The Bi-College News
February 22, 2009
Students for Justice in Palestine, a Bryn Mawr club that works to raise awareness regarding the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, is calling on Bryn Mawr College to divest from Caterpillar, General Electric, and Boeing because of strong evidence showing that these companies sell arms, technology, and other military products that support the illegal military occupation. Caterpillar sells special D-9 Bulldozers to the Israeli military. These bulldozers have razed countless Palestinian homes to make way for illegal Jewish settlements. General Electric supplies Israel with motors to keep their tanks up and running to ensure continued destruction of Palestinian infrastructure, and Boeing supplies low-clearance jets and planes that have dropped bombs on Palestinian refugee camps, killing civilians, women and children, all in the name of "security."
As members of the Bryn Mawr College community, acting in accordance with the College Mission StatementÑwhich asks students to be conscious citizens of the worldÑwe believe that our College ought to use its influence to encourage the United States government and the government of Israel to respect the rights of the Palestinian people.

Adbusters.org: Campus Divestment vs. Israeli Apartheid

My wife and I have joined activists at my alma mater in launching The Swarthmore Campaign, the first divestment campaign to be formed after the invasion of Gaza. Within three days we have already gathered over 60 signatures with more coming in every hour. The positive response demonstrates that the moment is ripe for divestment campaigns to sweep universities across the world. As we saw with the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, divestment is an effective tool to bringing about peace.
